Feb 23 2016 The Bluff on the Road to the Lab

As someone who lives in Toronto even though I have quite a short commute to work of about 15 minutes I still get annoyed by it. While I was at Alert in order to get out to the lab we had drive about 30 minutes from the station. This is a view along the way, I could get used to this commute.. It could be 2 hours long and I wouldn’t give a rats ass…

Feb 22 2016-An incredible sight

For some reason after a winter of very overcast skies, for the week I arrived it was mostly clear. Even more amazing the last full day I was there it was the full moon. You know how on those clear days when the full moon rises for about half an hour it is huge in the sky before it moves up higher and shrinks down? Well when the moon is full at Alert it rises like that and stays huge and just oscillates up and down across the horizon all day. It really does feel like you are on another planet where all the physics are different. On that day we also took a drive and visited the wreckage of a C-54 Skymaster aircraft that crashed in 1952 just sitting off to the side of the runway. All the crew of this crash survived and that seems all the more amazing when  you look and see what is left of it! An incredible piece of history just sitting there half buried under the snow, just highlighting the challenges of just being in a place like Alert.

Feb 22 2016-I love my Job

Yup the only way to get up to Alert is to go there for work. These were some of the views I got from the lab I was working in. Every time I went outside I looked around me I did a double take because these are the views that greeted me in every direction.

Feb 18 2016-A Very Special Place

Alert-24

I came to this place on the afternoon after I arrived at Alert. It is difficult to describe how amazing this place is, It felt as though I left my home in Ontario and stepped out onto another planet. First that is the ice covered Arctic Ocean you are seeing out there and that is certainly not the sun. The sun was not due to rise in Alert for another 10 days, so what I got while I was there during “normal” daylight hours was twilight, which frankly is a photographers dream.. Here where I was standing when I took this picture is something else entirely. A crazy thing about this spot is that while I was taking this picture unless there was someone flying over the North Pole in an aircraft I was probably the northernmost person on earth for a few minutes. Much more importantly  though what you can’t see from this picture is that about 10 feet to my left were the graves of 9 Canadian servicemen who died in a RCAF Lancaster 965 that crashed near Alert in 1950. Through the graves you could see that some arctic wolves had walked by not so very long ago. I did not take any pictures of the graves as I did not think any photograph I could take could do them the justice they deserved. I read their names, looked around and heard the silence around me, it was one of those moments that I will never forget and is impossible to describe.

Jan 10 2016 Crazy Cloud Forest

I started my Journey through Costa Rica with heading up into the cloud forest town of Monteverde. I was on a G Adventures trip where our guide actually grew up there and took us to this fantastic strangler fig that you could climb nearly all the way to the top inside the tree. I couldn’t get over just how cool it all looked.

Jan 24 2016 Many Monkeys!

In my time in Costa Rica I did not see many monkeys on the first half of the trip, but when I went to Tortuguero national park.. They just kept appearing, made me sad I did not make it to the region with Squirrel monkeys!

Jan 13 2016 Frogs!

I have always had a soft spot Amphibians for as long as I can remember, which is why I tried to get as many pictures of them as I could. I took a lot but most were either asleep or in very bad light for pictures.. these are a few of the best.

Jan 22 2016 Into the Night

There are times where I just love to stand out and look into the night, here are few pictures where I got that opportunity in Costa Rica.

Dec 21 2015 Wander along the Leslie Street Spit

This past Sunday I took a walk out to the Leslie street spit, a place I had heard about but never actually went. Now after I have been it seems ridiculous that I never went especially since there were so many types of birds! I didn’t manage to catch any great photos of the birds but  the other awesome part of this place was the beach.. It is crazy how something that for all intensive purposes is a pile waste rock could look so very cool in the end.

Dec 6th 2015-Return to Duncan

Not long ago on a trip to Nova Scotia I managed to return to a place I always loved to go, Duncan’s Cove.. If you go back in my blog you will see a few more pictures of this place, it never seems to get old for me or my friends as you can see above.
